Article from Majorca Daily Bulletin Newspaper
If you thought the most important soccer match on Tuesday evening was the Madrid/Barcelona Champions League battle, you were obviously not in the vicinity of Alcudia Sports Centre when U. E. Alcudia and a team from Barwick in West Yorkshire fought for honours in an international friendly. The resulting 4-1 defeat for the English side was not really a true reflection of the balance of play, for Barwick were no pushovers. Though coming from a small village, the side is in the top four of Division One in the Yorkshire League (equivalent to Halifax playing in the English Premier Division, says manager Barry Kollesoff). A local success story that shows their home town might be small but it's certainly big on talent and big-hearted too. For a few, the trip to Majorca was their first time abroad, and all expressed themselves absolutely delighted to be here and overwhelmed at the friendliness with which they had been greeted. The tour, in celebration of the club's 50th birthday but planned to become an annual event, was first suggested by Peter Weatherill, club president, Barwick pub owner and well known figure in Puerto Pollensa where he has a home.
Puerto teacher Juan Aguilar and Barwick F.C.'s public relations liason Jason Broadbent then got down to the nitty gritty of organisation and the team arrived last Saturday - some 17 of them the team plus management, coach Jim Brennan and their physio, plus supporters.
The ranks of supporters have swelled since their arrival as the team rapidly made friends with British holidaymakers and residents alike.
The small but noisy crowd that cheered them on in Alcudia on Tuesday is likely to be much larger tonight (Thursday) when they play Puerto Pollensa F.C. at the local football ground.
The team have even acquired a temporary mascot during their stay. Six-year old Elliot, on holiday from Tunbridge Wells, followed the team about so much during their training sessions that he was formally adopted and kitted out in a tracksuit to match the team strip.
Barwick also see the Majorca tour as an important relaxation while training in preparation for a League Cup final that awaits them on their return to the UK.
Having won the cup last year they are determined to retain it and, though defeated by the semi-professional Alcudia side on Tuesday, intend to take home some winners' laurels by beating Puerto Pollensa F.C. tonight.
The trophies exchanged by the clubs, and others presented by the Puerto Pollensa Sports Centre where the teams were invited for refreshments and to watch that other match of the evening, will certainly take pride of place on the Barwick mantelpiece.

ARTICLE FROM LEEDS WEEKLY NEWS
VIVA EL BARWICK!
An East Leeds football club travelled to Majorca to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Members of the Barwick first team played friendlies against Alcudia and Port Pollenca, but lost both games, 4 - 1 and 2 - 1 respectively.
The trip was organised by club president Peter Weatherill, Barwick pub owner and familiar face around Puerto Pollensa; chairman Jason Broadbent; and Puerto Pollensa teacher Juan Aguilar. It is hoped to make the trip an annual event.
